Mayo Clinic’s Critical Care Review for the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Associate is an interactive course designed for advanced practice providers working with critically ill adult patients. The course is comprised of lecture-based sessions covering essential acute care topics such as vasoactive support, ECMO, secondary trauma assessment, intracranial pressure, anticoagulant reversal, acute liver failure, toxicology, and more.

Submissions for presentation of original research dedicated to the field of Critical Care Medicine will be accepted for review by our course directors. Presentations will be made throughout the duration of the course. Submissions may include and are not limited to guidelines, randomized trials, outcome studies, practice innovations, case studies, case reports or descriptive analyses.

Target Audience
Mayo Clinic’s Critical Care Review for the Nurse Practitioner and Physician Associate is an interactive course designed for advanced practice providers working with critically ill adult patients. The course is comprised of lecture-based sessions covering essential acute care topics such as vasoactive support, ECMO, secondary trauma assessment, intracranial pressure, anticoagulant reversal, acute liver failure, toxicology, and more.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Critically evaluate management strategies for acute organ failure syndromes, including submassive pulmonary embolism, acute liver failure, variceal hemorrhage, and the acute abdomen
- Incorporate evolving therapies and supportive care practices such as hyperbaric oxygen, palliative medicine integration, vasoplegia alternatives, and renal replacement therapy into comprehensive ICU care
- Differentiate and manage complex shock states and emergencies, such as cardiogenic shock, anaphylaxis, malignant hyperthermia, and serotonin syndrome, with evidence-based pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions
- Interpret and utilize bedside diagnostic tools—including ultrasound for echocardiography, lung assessment, FAST, and DVT screening—to guide timely management decisions in acute care
- Apply advanced airway and procedural skills by performing and troubleshooting intubation, bronchoscopy, surgical airway techniques, and central venous access in critically ill patients
